The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects students’ privacy by regulating the release of personal records maintained by an educational institution and ensuring students have access to their own records. In order to stay in compliance, Newman University will not release any personal or academic information to another person unless written permission has been obtained from the student. If you wish to give permission for you personal information to be released to another individual, please download, print, complete and return the release form (link to release form). Learn more (link to additional info) about FERPA.
What FERPA rights are given to students?
- Right to inspect and review their education records.
- Right to request to amend their education records.
- Right to limit disclosure of "personally identifiable information" (information that would directly identify the student or make the student's identity easily traceable) knows as directory information.
- Right to file a complaint with the Department of Education concerning an alleged failure by the institution to comply with the Act.
Directory Information
Schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, schools must tell parents and eligible students about directory information and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not disclose directory information about them.
