Deciding on a Career
Individual career counseling and guidance is offered to students and alumni who may be uncertain about what major or career to pursue and believe they would benefit most by working individually with a career counselor. This process will involve looking at steps in the career planning process, including self assessment and career exploration. During this process, we will look at your interests, values, abilities and personality as they relate to career information. You will likely be asked to take some career assessment inventories as well as do research on your own.

Career Assessments

For students questioning which major to choose, “What can I Do With This Major” is a helpful tool for exploring various areas of study leading to successful career choices.

The computerized program SIGI 3 is available to help students assess how their interests, abilities, experiences, values, and learning and decision making styles have an impact on their choice of careers. It is also possible to research various career options through the use of this program. Students can access SIGI 3 from computers in the Hangar by logging in with your NU user name & password, then click ‘Register’ if using SIGI 3 for the first time.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a personality assessment designed to help you understand yourself and others better. In the career planning process, it can provide insights into what type of career might suit you best. The assessment takes about 30 minutes and is scored in our office.

The Strong Interest Inventory is another assessment tool that can be used in the Career Planning process. This assessment categorizes employment into six different career areas and matches your interests with those of satisfied workers in these fields. The assessment is not scored in our office and takes about one week to get the results.

There is no charge for any of these services for NU students or alumni.
