Cover Letters and Other Types of Letters

Cover Letter/Application Letters

When applying for a job, many people spend a great deal of time writing their resume, but consider the cover letter as an afterthought. This can be a major mistake since the cover letter is actually the first impression the potential employer has of you. It is your personal introduction to the employer and may determine whether or not you get the interview. The cover letter, which allows you to show your personality and writing skills, may be less formal than the resume. However, the focus of the letter should always be on the needs of the employer.

You should learn as much as possible about the company with which you are applying and the requirements of the position. Take the time to research each organization and personalize each letter. You can obtain information about many large companies from directories available in most libraries or from the company’s annual report.

General Purposes of a Cover Letter/Application Letter

  • To introduce the writer and the resume.
  • To indicate a knowledge of and interest in a particular employer and a desire for the position.
  • To explain briefly what you have to offer.
  • To request an interview.

Types of Cover Letters/Application Letters

Specific Letter: In response to an advertised position. Tailor your letter to the specific requirements listed in the advertisement.

Search-Firm Letter: Targeted to a number of selected search firms or employment agencies. You should focus on your specific qualifications and skills, the type of position you are seeking, and the type of industry. Highlight your most impressive accomplishments and attributes. If you have preferences or requirements, these should be indicated as well.

Unsolicited Letters: Seeking employment with a company where a position has not been posted. This type of letter should be used after researching companies for whom you would like to work. Show that you have knowledge about the company and the relevant qualifications and skills to benefit the company.
