Loyal to you, crimson and blue, We'll back you all the way. Stand up and sing and let it ring: Jet Power is here to stay!" |
Under the direction of President Sylvia Gorges, ASC, Sacred Heart College was launched into intercollegiate athletics in 1967.
Men’s basketball was the only sport, and Herm Bachrodt was the head coach. Rick Rineberg joined Bachrodt to build the basketball program as the assistant coach; the two had coached together previously at Kapaun High School.
Two years later Bachrodt became the school’s first athletic director and turned the basketball reins over to Rineberg, who in spring 1971 led the team to the NAIA National Tournament. In 1972, Bachrodt left Newman. He was among the inaugural inductees to halls of fame at both Kapaun and Newman.
In 1978, Paul Sanagorski started the first intercollegiate baseball program at Kansas Newman College. For the next 15 years, Sanagorski was a one-man show leading the baseball program. He also was an instructor, an assistant basketball coach, the head women’s golf coach and intramural director at various times.
Sanagorski quickly built a successful program: By 1983, the team reached the NAIA World Series. Overall, he led the Jets to the most wins in school history - 766 in his 23 seasons with Newman, a record also ranking him 11th among all NAIA baseball coaches. In 2000, Sanagorski left Newman when offered a job as a hitting coach in the Florida Marlins minor league system.
In 1992, Diane Leary, ASC, came to Kansas Newman College where she taught history, served as volleyball coach from 1992-1996 and athletic director from 1999-2002. As volleyball coach, she compiled a 150-61 record and was named MCAC Coach of the Year for the 1994-1995 season.
During her tenure at Kansas Newman, she led the athletics program to two men’s All-Sports awards, two Overall Sports awards, six MCAC Conference Season Championships, three MCAC Tournament Championships and three Region IV Tournament Championships. In 1996, she retired from athletics with a career coaching record of 419–185. She continued to teach history at Newman University until 2005.
