Earning a Spanish minor at Newman University To earn a Minor in Spanish at Newman University, students must earn a total of 17 credits by taking the following courses:
SPAN 1024 Elementary Spanish 2* SPAN 2013 Intermediate Spanish I* SPAN 2043 Spanish Conversation SPAN 2053 Spanish Readings SPAN 3013 Spanish Civilization & Culture SPAN 3881 Field Experience
Additionally, students entering Newman University with no prior coursework in Spanish need to take SPAN 1014 before beginning the abov sequence. Usually one year of high school Spanish is equivalent to one semester of university-level work.
*Students who already have several years of high school Spanish may begin by enrolling in Elementary Spanish 2 or Intermediate Spanish I. However, to earn the minor they must demonstrate mastery of the prior courses by either:
- Credit by Examination ($30 evaluation fee plus $50 verification fee per credit hour) or
- Taking the CLEP examination (cost: $80 total for up to eleven credits.)
Considering that the Credit by Examination could result in a substantial charge (up to $460 total for those earning credit for both SPAN 1014 and 1024,) the CLEP is a more economical option.
Students planning to earn the Spanish minor are strongly encouraged to participate in Newman University’s summer study abroad program in Latin America or Spain. These challenging and exciting cultural immersion experiences expedite student development of language proficiency and cultural understanding. |
