Are you thinking of becoming a physician? Maybe you’re interested in being an optometrist, a physical therapist, a dentist, an engineer or a veterinarian. Or perhaps medicalresearch is more attractive to you. Whatever path you choose, Newman University has a course of study that can help.
Health-RelatedNewman offers programs to prepare you for entering professional schools of dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary science, and engineering. Many students have found that the academic support from faculty and staff, small class sizes and excellent laboratory equipment make Newman ideal for completing the first two years of course work required for a bachelor’s degree in a professional area.
Newman also offers a highly respected course of study for those seeking a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or biochemistry with an emphasis for preparation in other health care professions which have bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite.
With its challenging undergraduate course of study and recommendations of successful students by our faculty, Newman University has an outstanding record of placement for students into medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy and veterinary schools. If you have the skills, drive and desire to build a career in the exciting world of health care, Newman has a curriculum that can help you succeed.
Coursework is the KeyEntrance into professional schools in the medical and veterinary sciences is very limited and requires rigorous preparation. Newman University provides both a curriculum and a network of support for those students showing the promise of entry into schools offering these degrees.
Prospective dental, medical, optometry, pharmacy or veterinary science students must have in-depth comprehension of required prerequisite courses so as to score within an acceptable range for admission as well as to cope successfully with the advanced level of biology and chemistry of the professional school courses. In fact, most students earn a degree in biology and/or chemistry due to the course requirements for a professional school.
If you are seeking entrance to a dental, medical, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary science, or engineering program you should also earn at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA during your time at Newman. One third of the work that professional school admission committees see is that completed by the end of the student’s freshman year.
With the exception of medical school, most professional programs such as engineering require entrance at the junior year of college. Entrance requirements for these programs vary slightly from school to school, however. For this reason, you should meet with your advisor early to determine the best course of study for you.
To provide the advising and support you need to succeed, Newman has created a committee for pre-medical students composed of faculty members in the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities. Their broad purpose is the personal advising of pre-medical students. They also serve as a recommending board in providing evaluations of student achievement to medical schools.
This is offered through the university’s School of Applied Social Sciences. Pre-law students may have an academic advisor in their chosen major in addition to a pre-law advisor from the school.
Learning Outside the ClassroomMost professional schools either want or require prospective students to have experience in their area of study. For this reason students are encouraged to work in a clinic or hospital to gain on-site work environment experience, and to enhance motivation, pre-professional preparation and the likelihood of acceptance. Wichita offers many health care and veterinary care opportunities. Newman University also has a strong commitment to volunteerism.
Newman also offers a variety of educational support systems for students, including tutors, learning labs, testing services and internship placements. |
