Welcome to the Chemistry/Physics Department!
Chemistry is often referred to as the central science because of its applicability to so many other areas. A study of chemistry allows individuals to obtain a sound background in preparation for advanced study, meet qualifications of professional chemists, acquaint themselves with the chemical aspects of the environment and civilization, deepen knowledge in chemistry as a scientific discipline, and prepare for professional careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, medical technology, engineering, teaching, and other fields.
The Department of Chemistry at Newman University offers both bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees in chemistry and a bachelor of science in biochemistry. In addition, students with majors other than chemistry may opt for a minor in chemistry.
Physics is the common thread that connects the physical and biological sciences. A deep comprehension of physics is essential to a firm understanding of biological, biochemical, chemical, physical, and engineering processes. Thus, physics courses are taken by students who wish to:
- Enter the professional workforce in chemical industry and government
- Teach in primary and secondary schools
- Attend professional schools in medicine, dentistry, optometry, and veterinary medicine
- Attend graduate schools in chemistry, biochemistry, and biology.
Although Newman University does not have a physics major, it does offer a variety of courses in physics ranging from introductory-level physical science to calculus based physics.
The Chemistry/Physics Department is located on the lower level of Heimerman Science Center and is made up of three faculty members with expertise in a variety of areas. The department boasts a nice collection of chemical instrumentation including an FT-IR, GC-MS, NMR, LC, multiple UV/Vis spectrophotometers, and two stand alone GC’s. |
