Welcome to the Sociology Department!
The sociologist’s understanding of the dynamics of people interacting in a social context can inform our efforts to write just laws, create effective welfare programs, and enhance the quality of life in the workplace. Newman’s curriculum will shape and sharpen your ability to examine social problems with the analytical mind of the sociologist. You will learn about the nature and function of the orgNU Studentsanizational units within a society that significantly shape the whole, units like the elderly, the family, and minorities. This course of study can be preparatory to law, graduate work or careers in research or government. You may also want to consider teaching certification in the social sciences.

A degree in sociology prepares you to work within environmental advocacy groups, local planning agencies, consulting firms, and health agencies. Also positions can be found within the court system, corrections, and law enforcement agencies.

A major in sociology can be enhanced by a minor or a double major in a variety of subject choices. These include English, journalism, philosophy, theology, political science, psychology, sociology, speech, or choral music.
