Welcome to the School of Social Sciences!
The social sciences include the disciplines that use the scientific method to understand human beings and their behavior as individuals and in groups. While each discipline focuses on different aspects (such as the individual, group, culture, or political and economic organization), together they provide an integrated picture of the human experience. Knowledge provided by the social sciences oNU Studentffers the potential to both understand and improve the human condition.

The disciplines of the Social Science Department--Anthropology, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, Psychology, and Sociology--work together to provide our students with the understanding and opportunities to apply their understanding that is consistent with the Mission of Newman University.

Social science graduates obtain employment in a wide variety of settings, such as hospital-based treatment programs, private practice settings, agencies serving youth and families, programs serving a multicultural clientele, halfway houses for adults and children, programs serving elderly clients, mental health agencies, a wide variety of other social service agencies, research programs, and governmental agencies. Additional sources of employment opportunities are available in the legal system and the criminal justice system, including probation, parole, corrections and law enforcement positions. Some students market their skills in a way that opens up opportunities in sales, human relations, and administration in business organizations. Often these employment experiences help students realize their deeply held values of working with people and of making the community a better place.

Some students use their undergraduate degrees to gain entrance into graduate programs, such as counseling, psychology, sociology, social work, administration of justice, sports administration, public administration, and law. Such graduate programs open opportunities to obtain more specialized employment.

No matter what career choice graduates make, their studies help them become knowledgeable and informed citizens. Through their knowledge of human behavior and their ability to think analytically about the social world around them, they are better prepared to understand the forces at work that shape the social environment and to understand how they can impact these forces.

Furthermore, most students of the social science obtain a clearer understanding of themselves and their fit into the environment of human behavior. The knowledge provided by the social sciences lends insights that expand self-awareness and contribute to a greater ability to be a proactive, involved and aware person.
