Welcome to the College of Arts & Sciences!

All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling [one's] life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom.
- Albert Einstein

The College of Arts and Sciences is home to the School of Arts and Humanities (Art, Communication, English, Foreign Languages, History, Music, Philosophy, Theatre and TheologDavid Shuberty), the School of Science and Mathematics (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics) and the School of Social Sciences (Counseling, Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, Psychology and Sociology). Our globalizing world is becoming increasingly dynamic, and most people will experience a career change at some point in their life. The value of a Newman education is more than becoming an expert in a single discipline. It is the ability to think, to communicate and to develop a solid ethical framework. It includes the experience of serving your local, regional and global neighbors. The knowledge, skills and values you learn here prepares you for life, not just a job.

What is unique about a Newman education? It is the teaching and the extracurricular activities. It is the spiritual growth and the service activities. It is the relationships and the community of scholars. It is the unique experience that is only possible where faith and reason meet. The curriculum and culture reflect the spirit of its founders, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, a Catholic order of sisters established by Saint Maria DeMattias. The university’s motto, Caritas Christi Urget Nos (The Charity of Christ Urges Us), succinctly captures the university’s understanding of its reason for existence. The elements of the mission—respecting the dignity of every person, desiring an education imbued with Catholic values, developing the whole person, becoming thinking persons, considering with special regard the disadvantaged and developing an interdependent global perspective—define the curricular and co-curricular educational experiences. Newman’s namesake, John Henry Cardinal Newman, an intellectual leader in the Catholic philosophy of education, emphasized the importance of education “as a blessing, or a gift, or power, or a treasure, first to the owner, then through him [or her] to the world.” The total learning experience empowers you to transform society.

Please take some time to explore our majors and programs. The faculty would be pleased to answer any questions you might have about majors, programs and careers. The admissions counselors can arrange a campus visit to meet the faculty and tour the facilities. The financial aid officers are ready to show you that a Newman education is within your means. If you are ready to explore your full human potential...intellectually, socially and spiritually...call us. And we will begin that journey together.
