Master's Degree in Business Administration  

Program Description

The Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) program at Newman University is designed to produce value-conscious graduates with a holistic understanding of how organizations function in an increasingly competitive, complex, and interdependent world. The Newman MBA is expected to make a difference: a strategic thinker, a creative, innovative leader, an effective, consensus-conscious team player; and a knowledgeable professional committed to lifelong growth and development.

The NU MBA is a 32 credit hour course of study, consisting of 10 courses, plus a lecture series. All students take six courses in common. The remaining four courses are split into five concentrations or “tracks”; students select the track that best fits their career objectives. The tracks are Entrepreneurship, International Business, Leadership, Management, and Management Information Systems, as shown on the following table:

NOTE: A joint Master of Business Administration/Master of Social Work program is offered by the School of Business and the School of Applied Social Sciences. Open only to students who complete both programs at Newman University, four courses in the student MSW degree program count as a social work track in their MBA program of study. Students may enroll in both degrees simultaneously, schedule permitting, or complete the degrees in sequence. In the second option, the student must enroll in the second degree program before completing the first.

Program Entry and Duration

Students may enter the MBA Program at three times per year: late August, January, and May. Depending on when the student starts her/his study, the program will be as short as fifteen (15) months to no more than twenty-two (22) months in length. Program Format

Classes are delivered in a variety of formats including compressed two-week sessions in August and January, eight-week sessions in the fall and spring, and five-week sessions in the summer. Compressed courses meet two nights per week and all day Saturday; eight-week courses meet one evening per week; five-week courses meet two evenings per week. In some classes, the instructor may incorporate time on the Internet as an extension of, or a substitute for, “seat time” in class, as appropriate to the learning objectives of the course and the program.

MBA Admission

Applicants must satisfy the general admission requirements of the university, plus the program specific requirements for the MBA.

  • Admission to Newman University Graduate Studies
  • Admission to the NU MBA program of study. Admission to the MBA program at NU requires the following:
    • Admission to Newman University Graduate Studies (see link, above).
    • Evidence of preparation leading to success in the program:
      • Baccalaureate degree (any major) from a regionally accredited college or university.
      • Minimum undergraduate g.p.a. of 3.0 or 3.2 for final 60 credit hours.
(Note: a limited number of students are admitted to each cohort who do not meet this requirement, upon other supporting indicators that they can be successful in the program. Contact the Program Director for specifics.)

  • Completion of the following three prerequisites: College Algebra (or higher), Macroeconomics, and Probability and Statistics. (Note: For applicants interested in the MIS track, there are four additional prerequisites – Introductory Programming, Database Applications, Principles of MIS, and Computer Network Concepts.)
  • Three letters of reference (PDF), preferably one each addressing the following: academic ability, professional experience, and character.

Fees

There is an application fee of $25 ($40 for international students), payable when the student applies to the university. A technology fee of $10 per credit hour is added to all courses, and is paid with the tuition. A graduation fee of $75 is due when the student submits the Application for Degree
