Moss became the Dean of the School of Education in July 2002. He began his career in education as a seventh grade English teacher in the Edmond, Okla. Public Schools. Moss later served as a middle school assistant principal, principal, district director of personnel and assistant superintendent in that district. He also served as assistant superintendent in the Flagstaff, Ariz., Unified Schools and as superintendent of schools in Weatherford, Okla. In 1995, Moss moved into higher education serving as an assistant professor and later as Dean of the School of Education and Graduate Studies at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. During his tenure there, he served for two years on the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. He teaches the Principalship course in the M.S.Ed. Program and Educational Psychology in the undergraduate program.

Juanita Alarcon joined the staff at Newman in May 2005 with twelve years work experience in various office settings. In her role as graduate program secretary, she works with graduate students from admission through graduation and provides support for members of the graduate faculty. As licensure analyst, Alarcon provides information on licensure standards and procedures, evaluates and prepares all of the School of Education’s license recommendations for submission to the Kansas State Board of Education, and maintains the university’s records on teacher licensure.

Susie Jacques joined Newman in April 2006. She has nine years of previous administrative experience in the College of Engineering at Arkansas State University. Jacques is married and has two children. Her family moved to Wichita after her husband accepted employment here in December 2004. She believes God brought her to Wichita for a reason. Her main interest is spending time with her family.

Glidden earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from the University of Iowa. He began his career as a teacher and counselor in Cresco, Iowa, and also worked as a counselor in White Bear Lake, Minn. and Iowa City, Iowa. Glidden taught at Memphis State University and was Director of Guidance for the Liverpool, New York and Central Schools. He spent many years with the Wichita Public Schools as director of guidance and pupil evaluation and director of pupil evaluation and testing. During that time, he also served as an adjunct instructor for Chapman College, Friends University, Wichita State University as well as Newman. Glidden joined the NU School of Education as assistant professor and coordinator of the graduate program in 2000. He teaches several courses in the graduate program, including the educational research courses Analysis of Research and Literature Review. He also supervises graduate students in practicum assignments. Glidden has a strong interest in the arts and music, and is a member of the Wichita Symphony Chorus.

Heydman is the assistant professor and director of Newman’s Distance Teacher Education Programs (TEP) at NU’s Western Center in Dodge City and in Southeastern Kansas at Independence Community College. Newman’s Distance TEPs include Elementary Education, English as a Second Language and Graduate Education. Besides teaching courses in the Elementary Education Program, he is responsible for all administrative duties including recruitment and advisement of students and recruitment and supervision of distance teacher education adjunct faculty. Heydman earned his bachelor’s at Phillips University and his master’s at West Texas State University. He completed additional graduate study at the University of Denver and Southwest Texas State University. Heydman joined the NU faculty in the fall of 2002, after thirty years of teaching experience in Texas. He taught at the public school, community college, and university levels. In 1995, Heydman was designated by the University of Michigan as one of the Ten Most Innovative Community College Teachers in the United States. In 1996, the Institute of Staff and Organizational Development of the University of Texas at Austin named him a Master Teacher. In 1999, the world’s largest professional speaking organization awarded him first place in the Toastmasters International Humorous Speaking Contest.

Dunn joined the School of Education faculty in 2002. Since 1993, Dunn has been an independent professional consultant with a mission to provide educational development and consultation in effective instructional strategies, learning theories, curriculum development, classroom management, and related educational topics. For the past several years, Dunn has been an author, trainer and consultant for several educational agencies, including: USAID Mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina Education Department Brcko District, International Youth Foundation, Quest and Lion’s International, Skylight International Renewal Institute, Ted Anders Company, National Children’s Educational Reform Foundation, American Management Systems, Army JROTC, and Church of God Hispanic Educational Ministries. Dunn earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Utah State University, and his Ed.D. from Brigham Young University. He has been a high school English teacher and coach in Utah, taught on the faculties of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio and Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Dunn teaches courses in the graduate program including Cultural Diversity, School Law, Advanced Curriculum and Instructional Methods. He also teaches Reading Skills in Secondary School Content for undergraduate secondary education candidates. He co-authored the book, Brain Compatible Learning for the Block, now in the process of a second edition, and has authored or co-authored several other books and journal articles.

Joan Purkey

Purkey earned her bachelor’s degree from Friends University and her Master of Education from Wichita State University. Purkey taught in Wichita elementary schools for several years and served as a Campus Support Math instructional specialist in the Title I program. She began her association with Newman as an Adjunct Professor in 1997 and in 2001 became Assistant Professor and recruiter at the university’s office as Hutchinson. In January 2002 she gave up the recruiting position and remained as a full-time Assistant Professor on campus. She teaches several courses in the elementary education program. Her specialty is elementary mathematics, and she has consulted for Kansas school districts in the area of math curricula. Purkey was promoted to Associate Professor in May 2006. She regularly presents at professional conferences in reading, math and early childhood and is a member of the state team for revision with the Kansas Mathematics Standards. Purkey’s “Math Perks for Teachers” was published by Bent Tree Press in September 2006.

Rogers is an associate professor and the coordinator of the Teacher Internship Program. She completed her associate’s degree at Auburn Community College and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Central Oklahoma. She began her career in education as an elementary teacher in Oklahoma. She was a visiting professor at Oklahoma State University while finishing her doctorate degree, and also authored a children’s book review column for a daily newspaper. Rogers joined Newman’s School of Education in 2000. Her publications include ten children’s books in the Think-Kids Literature Series and three non-fiction children’s books for the Rigby Literacy Series. Rogers teaches the class that all students take immediately preceding and during their internship, the Art and Science of Teaching, as well as Children’s Literature and other elementary education requirements. She is the Chair of the Kansas State Bill Martin, Jr. Picture Book Award Committee and an active member of the Kansas Reading Association and a Teacher Consultant with the Oklahoma State University Writing Project. She also regularly serves as an educational consultant to K-12 school districts.

Linda Clarkson

Clarkson joined the faculty of Newman University full time in July 2005 after serving for two years as Adjunct Professor. She received her undergraduate degree from Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma and her graduate degree from Pittsburg State University. Teaching assignments include teaching 5th and 6th grades in Gardner-Edgerton, Kan.; Carl Junction, Mo.; Dodge City, Kan.; and Cimarron, Kan. After receiving her Gifted Education Endorsement from Fort Hays State University, Clarkson served as Gifted Education Facilitator in Cimarron for eight years. She was selected to attend the NASA Educational Workshop for Elementary Science Teachers at Johnson Space Center. She has also presented at the State Gifted Convention and local workshops. Retiring from the public school system with 32 years of teaching, Clarkson joined the NU faculty at the Distance Teacher Education Center in Dodge City. Her responsibilities include teaching Methods and Instructional Media at Dodge City and Garden City, Math Methods K-9, Geometry and Statistics for Elementary Education, as well as serving as Coordinator of the Internship Program and supervising student teachers. Additional responsibilities include Coordinating the English as a Second Language Outreach Program for Southwest Kansas. Clarkson participates in her community and church, serving on the Church Board and elected as Missions President.

Hufford is a professor in the School of Education. He earned his bachelor’s at Baker University and his master’s at Fort Hays State University. Hufford completed his Ph.D. in Educational Foundations at the University of Kansas. He has additional graduate work, primarily in theology and religious social work from Southern Methodist University, Boston University and McCormick Seminary of Chicago. Before his appointment at Newman, Hufford’s career was spent serving as a teacher, supervisor and administrator at residential centers for children and youth. He served as Resident Director of United Methodist Youthville, Inc. in Dodge City, Kan. Before returning to Kansas, he was Director of the Youth and Children’s Center in Boston and Resident Director of the Hayden School for Boys in S. Athol, Mass. Hufford has also served as the associate director of the Lake Bluff Children’s Center in Lake Bluff, Ill. He has served as an adjunct instructor for Dodge City Community College, St. Mary of the Plains College, Wichita State University and the University of Kansas. He is the author of book chapters and numerous journal articles. Hufford has presented papers at a variety of national and international professional conferences. He is a past winner of the NU Outstanding Teacher award and the university’s award for scholarship and publication.

Nancy Finch-Folkerts joined the Newman staff in July 2004. She has previous experience in business, retail, and higher education. Finch-Folkerts served as Library Director for the Ness City Public Library for nine years and was the Personnel Manager and Administrative Assistant to the President of Dodge City Community College for four years. She earned her associate’s degree in Business Marketing from Dodge City Community College and also has additional coursework from Friends University, Wichita State University and Emporia State University. Finch-Folkerts and her husband, Alvin, live in Dodge City.

Frazier joined the School of Education faculty in 2004 as an assistant professor and coordinator of the Secondary Education Program. He has more than 25 years of experience working in Kansas schools. He has served as a middle school classroom teacher for Derby and Haysville, university instructor for Friends University and Wichita State University, educational technology specialist for Kansas State University, and district technology coordinator for the Manhattan district. Dr. Frazier earned a bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Wichita State University. He completed his doctoral studies in educational administration and technology leadership at Kansas State University. Max is co-author of the book The Technology Coordinator’s Handbook (recently designated as one of the top 15 publications by the publisher of the International Society of Technology in Education), and is author of several journal articles on educational technology. He currently serves as a board member for the Mid-America Association for Computers in Education. At Newman, he teaches secondary education methods and educational technology courses.
