The School of Education's Mission  
The mission statement of the School of Education of Newman University is as follows:

The School of Education seeks to inspire and encourage students to become caring, reflective practitioners who are intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually motivated to transform, self, schools, and society.Education at NU

The mission of the School of Education complements and maintains congruence with the university’s stated mission. The university “challenges its students to become liberally educated person who will respect the dignity of every person.” The School of Education consequently “seeks to inspire and encourage students to become caring…” The university expresses its desire to reflect the mission of its founding order of Sisters by “developing and empowering people,” and this desire is reflected in the SOE mission to “transform, self, schools, and society.”

Further, the university’s mission calls for students to “become thinking persons for tomorrow’s world by seeking degree programs in the liberal arts and selected professional career areas…” and that sentiment is further articulated in the unit’s mission to “inspire and encourage students to become…reflective practitioners” (emphasis added here and in the following examples). The university’s mission statement also challenges students to “develop their whole person by following Cardinal Newman who teaches that the development of the intellect and spirit along with the practical arts is intrinsic to the fulfillment of the human potential.” The unit’s mission seeks to “inspire and encourage students” to be “intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually motivated…to transform self….”

A close study of the guiding values and beliefs of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ as well as those embedded in the University’s Mission Statement reveals a commitment to producing students who are knowledgeable and well rounded; possess the tools of inquiry including reflection to enable them to become lifelong learners; and who have a set of ethical and spiritual principles to guide them in their life’s journey. A juxtaposition of intellect, emotion and spirit is present in such a student. Such an image is not value free; rather what emerges is a clear mission to develop virtuous students who, through the acquisition of the knowledge and skills of a liberal education, will become catalysts for their own continuing personal and professional development and instruments for transforming institutions such as schools, and society. Therefore, a Newman education can and must empower and inspire students to become active participants in shaping themselves and their world.

These missions form the core beliefs that sustain the unit, and are integral to the development of our conceptual framework, the development and revisions to the goals we have for our candidates and our unit, and our everyday actions in carrying out the various functions and responsibilities that we have as a faculty and staff. Each program decision and policy developed is reflective of the mission of the University and the School of Education.
