| A Brief History of the Newman University OT Program
From 1985 to 1991, a program was in place to provide pre-OT coursework at Newman University combined with professional coursework at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The need for a local professional program brought together local and regional OT practitioners from all areas of practice, and in 1992, a baccalaureate program in OT was established at Newman University with the generous support of area hospitals and OTs. Since that time, the Newman program has developed in many areas including a new building with state-of-the-art learning facilities.
The change in standards by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) required a change in the OT program at Newman. The decision was made that an occupational therapy program at the graduate level would not be offered due to the mandatory master level entry into the profession by January 1, 2007. New students for the baccalaureate program are not being recruited.
Students wishing to pursue pre-OT studies at Newman University may wish to participate in our "3+2" OT Dual Degree arrangement with the MS OT program at Washington University in St. Louis. A “3+3” OT Dual Degree entry-level Doctoral (OTD) arrangement with Washington University is also available. Inquiries regarding the 3+2 and 3+3 courses of study should be directed to Surendra Singh, Ph.D., faculty advisor for pre-OT studies. |
