The Program
The Investigative Summer Science Program (ISSP) is designed to enhance enthusiasm and interest of high school juniors and seniors in the sciences and motivate them through exploration and testing of ideas for careers in the sciences.
The program is offered in response to a national concern about the diminishing number of young people pursuing careers in the sciences.
Newman University is proud to have Fred C. and Mary R. Koch Foundation and the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita as co-sponsors of the Investigative Summer Science Program.
Objectives
- To make science a fun and exciting opportunity through an investigative laboratory approach.
- To broaden students' scientific interests and inform them of opportunities and challenges in science and medicine.
- To strengthen pre-college science education and address the needs of students during the critical years when concepts and attitudes are developed.
- To foster independent scholarship, originality and competence in physical, biological and health sciences.
- To rebuild our human resource for basic sciences and provide a basis for future technological exploration in science and medicine.
- To increase the number of high school science teachers by motivating participants to learn more about science through hands-on discovery.
Format
Participants selected for the ISSP will be required to stay in campus housing. Room and board for two weeks and two hours of college credit, upon successful completion of the program, will be provided at no charge to participants. The program will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 9-20, 2008. Library research, relevant films and videotapes will be shown in the evenings with follow-up discussions. Since participants are minors, they are expected to remain on campus at all times unless accompanied by faculty members or parents.
Each participant will select one research topic from each of the biological or medical and physical sciences and will conduct a literature search on the selected topics, set up laboratory/field experiments, collect data, analyze the results, draw conclusions from the findings, and, finally, write two papers in a scientific format. After the papers are completed, participants are expected to enter their papers at the annual meeting of the Kansas Junior Academy of Science. Supervision and project background information will be provided by the program faculty in a one-to-one ongoing discussion format rather than traditional lectures. Field trips and guest speakers will be scheduled in the late afternoons and during the weekend.
Criteria for Selection
Applicants must be current high school juniors or seniors with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and have completed at least one high school science course.
Applicants need to complete the application for admission on the back of this brochure and include a letter of recommendation from a teacher or principal along with a high school transcript. They will also be required to include a 200-word essay explaining their career goals and the reason they should be considered for the ISSP.
All application materials must be postmarked by May 26, 2008, for guaranteed consideration. Applicants selected to attend will be notified about their selection by May 30, 2008. Selected participants will reflect the same proportion of rural to urban students as that of Kansas' general population.
