Newman University and the Wichita Chapter of the Alumni Association held the fourth annual Art of Food and Drink on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007. More than 165 faculty, staff, alumni and friends o f Newman gathered to enjoy a gourmet dinner and raise funds to help Newman students by providing financial support for the university's Monsignor McNeill Scholarship.
The Art of Food and Drink was held beneath a canopy under the stars on the Newman campus. Diners enjoyed a winemakers dinner that paired wines from the Cavit Vineyards in Trentino, Italy, and the Rocca delle Macie winery in Italy’s Chianti Classico zone with menu items prepared by Great Western Dining in Wichita. The wines were presented by Palm Bay Imports Area Manager Doug Oldani. Palm Bay imports more than 80 brands from 11 countries.
In addition to the gourmet fare and wines, attendees enjoyed music by the Newman University singing ensemble, the Troubadours. The evening also featured a drawing to win a variety of prizes. Drawing tickets were available to anyone 21 years old or older, with a suggested contribution of $5.
The grand prize – round-trip airfare for two to Rome, Italy, with a private wine tasting and vineyard tour – was sponsored by the Catholic Family Federal Credit Union (CFFCU). Marilyn Wells, CFFCU president, drew the winning ticket from among the approximately 950 tickets entered. The winning ticket holders were Carm and Mike Ludlow, M.D. Both are graduates of Newman.
Other prizes included a Tea Basket and Coffee Basket sponsored by The Spice Merchant, as well as two wine baskets. Additional sponsors for the event were Donlevy Lithograph, Inc., Menges Rentals, Inc., Goebel Liquor and Kale Hamel.

“Thanks to the hard work of several Newman students, the efforts of our Great Western Dining chefs and staff, and the many Newman faculty and staff who participated as workers and guests, the Art of Food and Drink was a rousing success,” said Newman Director of Alumni Relations Ann Fox. “We appreciate everyone’s participation and support, and look forward to an even greater event next year.”
