Wichita, Kan. – Newman University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Potter and his staff had several needs to address in the off-season. The Jets will return three starters from a team that went 14-13 in its first year of NCAA play.

The Newman Jets Men's Basketball Team is proud to annouce that eight of their players have been named to the Heartland Conference Academic Honor Roll. Student-Athletes with a 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) to a 3.49 cumulative GPA, receive the Commissioner’s Award. Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above, receive the President’s Award.

The last gasp for the class of 2008 was not quite enough for the Newman University men’s basketball team Saturday night. A 13-0 second half run ignited the Newman crowd (which included a large contingent of fans in Braveheart garb) but St. Edward’s University, the Heartland Conference regular season champs, eventually pulled out an 80-66 victory at Fugate Gymnasium.

It took four overtimes, 25 lead changes, and 20 ties before the Newman University men’s basketball team claimed a 114-103 victory over Texas A&M International at Fugate Gymnasium Saturday night. Ryan Bradley owned the inside with 40 points and 12 rebounds to power the Jets (13-9) past the Dust Devils (8-13).

In a game that saw 12 ties and 19 lead changes, the Newman University men’s basketball team dropped an 83-78 overtime thriller to the University of Incarnate Word Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium. Cole Elliott’s jumper in the final seconds of regulation would not drop for the Jets (12-9) and the Cardinals (14-8) hit all three three-point attempts in overtime to topple Newman.

The Jets got it done on the road Saturday, defeating Lincoln University, 91-74. The win was Newman's 3rd in a row. Caleb Fine provided the initial spark, hitting two 3's on the Jet's first two possessions. That would be the beginning of a 50 percent team effort behind the arc. The Jets jumped out to an 18-7 lead 5 minutes into the game and never looked back.

The Newman University men’s basketball team rediscovered its shooting touch in a 93-87 victory over Dallas Baptist Thursday night in Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets (10-5) buried 13 three-point baskets and shot over 53 percent from the floor in defeating the Patriots (5-12).

The Newman University men’s basketball team nearly pulled off an impressive comeback but could not overcome frigid three-point shooting in a 77-66 defeat to the University of Texas-Permian Basin Saturday night at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets (8-5) hit just 4-of-21 beyond the arc in the second half and the Falcons (4-10) flew towards 24 fast break points.

After an impressive 8-1 start, the Jets traveled to Arkansas and hit a bump in the road. A "slow start" would be an understatement. Arkansas Tech made 14 of their first 16 shots to jump out to a 38-6 lead. Although Newman responded with several runs in the game, they were never able to get the margin back into single digits. The Jets fell for just the second time this season, 94-70.
