BOWL: Jets Conclude Regular Season

The Newman bowling team concluded its regular season with a fifth place finish at the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. this past weekend. The Jets were led by their senior leader Derek Hartnell, who averaged 217 for the tournament and finished in 11th place overall.

BOWL: Jets Earn First Tourney Win

The Newman men's bowling team won the McKendree Baker Challenge this past weekend in St. Louis, Mo. The field of the tournament was stacked, with eight of out of the top twenty teams in the country represented.

BOWL: Jets 5th, 10th in Indiana

The Newman bowling teams returned to action this past weekend. Both the men's and women's teams held their own in the biggest field ever assembled for a college bowling tournament. The men's field at The Blue and Gold Classic was made up of 66 mens teams, while 44 women's teams competed in the event.

The Newman bowling teams struggled in their two tournaments over the holiday break. The men's and women's squads finished in the middle of the pack at the Keyston Classic, and the Nittany Lion Classic, respectively.

Jets 5th, 17th in National Poll

Both Newman bowling squads appeared in the first National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association poll, which was released last week. The NU men's squad was fifth on the 20-team national poll, while the Jets' women's squad was 17th.

Hartnell Upsets PBA's Barnes

Newman University collegiate bowler Derek Hartnell will participate in the winner-take-all Chris Barnes Challenge presented by Columbia 300 on Saturday at 3 p.m. Northrock Lanes. The event is being billed by bowling fans as a match-up between today's superstar and bowling's superstar of tomorrow. It will also carry local appeal, as it presents a match between a current Newman bowler and a former Wichita State standout.

Simmons 12th at Red, White, Blue Open

Former Newman bowler Cory Simmons has advanced through the qualifying rounds, and is in 12th place at the Red, White, and Blue Classic, being held this week at North Rock Lanes in Wichita. Simmons will play 24 match-play games starting at 6 p.m. tonight, with 16 more games tomorrow. The top six in the event will advance to Sunday's finals, which will be televised nationally in a tape-delay broadcast on ESPN2.

Newman Bowling Thrives in Wichita

It's no secret that Wichita has a rich collegiate sports history, most of which centers around the rich traditions of Wichita State baseball and basketball. But in the past 40 years, another more unfamiliar sport has made its way into the spotlight; one that has planted its roots deep in Wichita, and has seen unprecedented success from two of the city's three universities, including the reigning national coach of the year, and the early favorite for national player of the year.

Wichita, Kan. – The Newman University men’s and women’s bowling teams will depart at 4 a.m. on Wednesday to compete in the Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) and a chance to claim Newman’s first ever National Title.  Both teams bring momentum and Top 10 rankings to the tournament, a fact which may ease any discomfort brought by the early wake-up call.

Bowlers Advance to National Tournament

Fairview Heights, Ill. – After finishing the last 32 baker games of qualifying at the USBC Intercollegiate Sectional Tournament, both Newman teams finished in the top four to advance them to the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC). The ITC will be held in Rockford, Il., April 15th-19th at Cherry Bowl and will consist of the top 16 teams in the nation competing for the national title.

Jets Take Leatherneck Title

Rock Island, Ill. -- This weekend at the Leatherneck Classic, hosted by Western Illinois University, the Newman Jets men’s bowling team accomplished several triumphs.  Not only did they win their first tournament title in nearly three years but they also defeated No. 1 nationally ranked Lindenwood University in the semi-final match. The Jets then met defending national champions Wichita State University for the championship match.
