The Newman cross country program has received a National Letter of Intent from Conner Penney, head coach Josh Schepis announced Monday. Penney took fourth in the AVCTL Division IV last season. He was also the winner of the Goddard invitational.

The Newman University women's cross country team has been named a 2009 NCAA Division II USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday. The Jets are one of 100 teams to receive such an honor.

Sophomore Austin Hunt's school-record 10K outing was one of the lone bright spots in Newman's appearance at the NCAA Div. 2 South Central Regional Championship Saturday in Abilene, Texas. Hunt broke his own school record from a year ago by 50 seconds, posting a 33:25 in the race.

Three Newman runners finished in the top 10 as the Jets captured second place at the Heartland Conference championships Saturday morning in Dallas, Texas. Chris Taylor led the Jets with a second-place finish after completing the 8K course in 26:29.

Two Newman women's Cross Country runners posted times better than the Newman school record and led the Jets to a sixth place finish in the 11-team Ollie Isom Invitational Friday afternoon in rural El Dorado. Newman's men's squad finished fifth in the 13-team men's race.

Senior Melissa Ortiz became the first Newman Cross Country runner to win a race in the program's eight-year history, and did so in record-breaking fashion. Her time of 15:27 on a wet and hilly course near Baldwin City was the best time in school history, and earned her first place honors in the field of 73 runners at the Maple Leaf Invitational.

Lady Jet Melissa Ortiz broke the Newman school record on Saturday at the 20th annual Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. Ortiz a junior from Wichita West ran the 5K course in 18:34, placing 28th out of 287 runners and breaking her own record by 14 seconds. The Lady Jet’s finished 20th in the 34 team field.

Rodriguez Answers the Call to Duty

Jets Cross Country runner Arthur Rodriguez just missed 14 days of practice and the team's first meet of the year, and Coach Josh Schepis couldn't be more proud. Rodriguez was called to action through the Army National Guard shortly after the hurricanes swept through the Gulf Region.

Wichita, Kan. – Friday’s cross country meet hosted by Friends University at Lake Afton, Kansas has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. At this time, there are no plans to make up the Friends meet, however, the team will add the Tabor Invitational to the schedule on September 27th.

Newman University's Melissa Ortiz set a school record Saturday at the Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City, Kan. Ortiz placed 5th in the 4k race with a time of 15:38. Camille Johnson also placed for the Jets helping the team to a 4th place finish in the 13 team field.
