As of the first of July, the Newman Jets 2008 Cross Country Teams were hard at work. The Jets return five runners that have earned All-Conference honors in the past two seasons.

Henry Nominated As Finalist

Wichita, Kan. – Newman University cross country runner Blake Henry has been nominated for the 2008 Male College Athlete of the Year Award from the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. Henry is one of three finalists for the award, which will be announced during the 11th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet June 27 at the Hawker Beechcraft Activity Center.

School Record Falls in Texas

Sophomore Melissa Ortiz set a school record at the Heartland Conference Championships Saturday in San Antonio, Texas. Her time of 18:47.8 breaks her old mark of 19:00 she set last year. Ortiz finished 3rd in the race and earned All-Conference honors to help led the women to their 5th place finish at the 2007 Championships.

Men are Conference Runner-ups

The men showed up to compete Saturday at the Heartland Conference Championships held in San Antonio, Texas. The team put their top five runners in the top 20 finishers. The Jet’s were lead by Senior Blake Henry and his 3rd place overall finish. Henry earned All-Conference honors with his finish of 26:13.

Ortiz Medals at Mid-States Classic

In one of the most bizarre races in years Sophomore Melissa Ortiz earned a medal in the prestigace Mid-States Classic. The race featured 210 runners from 31 teams in eight different States. Ortiz placed 16th with a time of 19:35, her second fastest time of the year. The race took a turn for the worst 600 meters into the race literally.

Henry Misses Title by 2.07 Seconds

Only 2.07 seconds separated Sr. Blake Henry from an individual title this Saturday at Marion Reservoir. Henry placed second in the field of 106 competitors in a time of 26:28. All five of the Newman men scores were in the top 28.

X-C Runs on Championship Course

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams had the opportunity Saturday to run on the NCAA Division II National Championship course in Joplin, Mo. The teams competed against 39 collegiate teams, four D-I and 17 D-II schools.
