Dear Students,
Whether you’re relatively new to Newman University or have been a student here for several years, I think you’ll find – as I have in my brief time as president of this wonderful institution – much to celebrate.
In my personal case, I have had the great pleasure of getting to know many of you through various student groups and by attending the many campus activities and sporting events Newman has to offer. I have also enjoyed learning about Newman and its rich history and heritage, and I continue to learn more every day.
I also think the entire Newman community has had much to celebrate in the many accomplishments of this past academic year. Among other things, we opened new residence halls and the Dugan Library and Campus Center, we’ve enjoyed the success of our athletics teams and the transition to NCAA Division II, we earned regional accreditation of our university and national accreditation of our School of Education, and we’ve seen growth in campus activities and tremendous academic success by students from every part of the university.
We also instituted an electronic Alert System that allows university community members to receive updates and campus-wide alerts on their cell phones, PDAs and e-mail in the event of an emergency or inclement weather conditions. If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to sign up for this helpful and free service. Simply go to the Home page at www.newmanu.edu, and log-in with your regular user ID and password. After you sign in, click on the option on the left-hand side of the screen that says NU Alert System and follow the directions.
Looking forward to the 2008-2009 academic year, we will find many reasons to celebrate as well. Beginning in the fall semester, for example, we will observe the 75th anniversary of this institution with a full year’s worth of events and activities. You’ll learn more in the months ahead about the many fun and exciting activities surrounding this milestone event. It is truly an inspiring story of how a small junior college founded by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ to train teachers and nurses grew to become the multifaceted institution Newman University is today.
As we look forward, I hope you will also consider celebrating the spirit of Newman by taking part in the many clubs and campus activities the university offers, as well as the service programs and opportunities Newman makes possible. It is through these efforts of reaching out to others that we truly achieve the university’s mission of transforming society for the better.
As always, I wish you the best throughout the semester and in completing your class assignments and final exams. If you feel you need assistance, remember that Newman has plenty of learning resources available, including your professors, the Dugan Library and Campus Center, the Hangar, the Math and Writing Center, and peer tutors. All this and more is available because we want you to succeed.
In addition, don’t forget to talk with your advisor about registration for the summer and fall semesters, and make sure to file the necessary paperwork – including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – and meet with a financial aid representative to review all options for funding your education.
Finally, don’t forget to celebrate you – your achievements, accomplishments and efforts. You are the reason we are here, and you have every reason to be proud of yourself and your achievements, as we are proud of you.
Thank you again for all you’ve done to make me feel welcome this year. I look forward to working together in the future, as we strive to make Newman a learning environment that celebrates and serves the “Whole You” – the academic, the social, and the spiritual.
Sincerely,

Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D.
