Liberal Studies major (B.A.)

Specific Requirements for Major
Beyond the core requirements which provide a foundation for liberal education, the bachelor of arts in liberal studies requires specific courses directed at broad social and cultural ideas particularly noting the ethical dimension of the human person in community. This is coupled with a minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework in each of three distinct disciplines. The capstone project serves to bring the major to completion.

    44–46 total credit hours including:
    36 credit hours from 3 of the following disciplines (12 credit hours in each discipline):
    Art
    Biology
    Business Administration
    Chemistry
    Communication
    Counseling
    Education
    English
    History
    Information Technology
    Mathematics
    Music
    Nursing
    Philosophy
    Physical Science
    Psychology
    Sociology
    Theology
  2. HUM 406- Interdisciplinary Project
  3. SOC 3003 Social Problems OR THEO 3003 Christ Moral & Social Issues

    3. SOC 3003 or THEO 3003 may not be included in the twelve credit hours of a discipline counted for the degree (unless both SOC 3003 and THEO 3003 are taken, in which case one may be included in the twelve credit hours for a discipline)
  4. Required classes from the General Education Curriculum may not be included in the twelve credit hours of a discipline for the degree
  5. Students may include no more than four one-hour classes within the 44–46 credit hours of the liberal studies major
  6. Minors will not be granted for disciplines included in the liberal studies major
  7. Of the 44–46 credit hours in the liberal studies major, 25–27 credit hours must be upper division. The difference between 25–27 credit hours depends upon the number of hours taken for HUM 406- Interdisciplinary Project
  8. The liberal studies major may not be included with another major for a double major
Baccalaureate Degree General Requirements:
A total of 124 credit hours, including 40 credit hours of upper division courses (minimum) and 30 credit hours completed at Newman University (minimum). You must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
