Dr. Michael Austin Named Provost at Newman University

Newman University officials announced this week that Michael Austin, Ph.D. has accepted the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Austin was selected following a national search process to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of B. Lee Cooper, Ph.D., effective March 2008. Austin will assume his duties at Newman University June 1.

Newman University Honors Western Kansas Graduates

Twenty students from western Kansas received their bachelor’s degree in education during the Newman University Fall 2007 Commencement ceremony in Wichita on Saturday, Dec. 15. Earlier in the week, the same students were honored with special awards at a banquet at the Dodge City Country Club.

Newman University Honors Fall 2007 Graduates

The Newman University Fall 2007 Commencement ceremony was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Central Community Church, 6100 W. Maple in Wichita. This fall, Newman awarded a total of 148 degrees, including 11 associate’s degrees, 109 bachelor’s degrees and 28 master’s degrees (the awarding of degrees is subject to the completion of all requirements, including courses, internships or other activities expected to be completed in the near future).

Newman University Steckline Gallery Features Acrylics by Margaret Konecny Jan. 7-18, 2008

The Newman University Steckline Gallery will continue its 2007-2008 season with “Passing By,” an exhibition of acrylic paintings by Margaret Konecny. The show begins Jan. 7 and will run through Jan. 18, 2008, with a closing reception on Jan. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Wichita High School Students Complete Newman University Hispanic Scholar Program

Newman University recently celebrated the success of 21 Wichita high school students who completed the fall 2007 Hispanic Scholar Program. The students, who performed individualized projects in the biological, health or physical sciences, were selected from Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, as well as Wichita Metro-Meridian Alternative, Wichita East and Wichita North High Schools as part of an ongoing effort by Newman to keep Hispanic students in high school and encourage them to pursue higher education.

Newman University Athletics Director Kevin Ulwelling to Resign Jan. 4, 2008

Kevin Ulwelling has submitted his resignation as athletics director at Newman University. The resignation will be effective Jan. 4, 2008, according to a letter Ulwelling wrote to Newman President Noreen M. Carrocci, Ph.D. Ulwelling said he is leaving the university to take a management position with Midwest Single Source, a Wichita-based business.
