Former Newman history professor to discuss 1940s genocide in Croatia Oct. 4
Newman University History, Political Science Department to Host Speaker Series

Wichita, Kan. – The 2007 History Speaker Series for Newman University will begin next week. Those attending will learn about a serious situation which occurred in the mid-1940s and how the United States reacted. The topic, “The Subject Matter Requires Punch: The United States’ Response to Genocide in the Independent State of Croatia, 1941 – 1945,” will be presented by Robert McCoDr. Robert McCormickrmick, Ph.D, assistant professor of history for the University of South Carolina Upstate. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center within Newman University’s Dugan Library and Campus Center.

Dr. McCormick earned his doctorate of philosophy from the University of South Carolina in 1996 as well as his master of arts in 1992. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University in 1986 with a major in history and minor in politics. Dr. McCormick has been at the University of South Carolina Upstate since 2002. Prior, he served as assistant professor of history, associate professor of history and department chair of history for Newman University from 1996 to 2002. He has also taught at the University of South Carolina, Benedict College, Central Carolina Technical College, and Danville Area Community College in Illinois.

As a widely published scholar, McCormick’s fields of focus have included Modern Europe, Eastern Europe, Early Modern Europe, Latin America, and Colonial America. Newman University is pleased to welcome Dr. McCormick on campus to discuss his latest article, which is scheduled for publication in the Genocide Studies and Prevention 3 journal for 2008.

The Newman University History Speaker Series is hosted each year by the Department of History and Political Science. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required to attend.
