Newman University Presents Literary Festival
‘Godzilla Fest ’08’ April 5 and 6
Wichita, Kan. –Newman University is hosting a series of readings and panel presentations on how people deal with violent upheaval in their lives during the 9th Annual Newman University Literary Festival, “Godzilla Fest ‘08: Returning from Ruin: Living in the Aftermath.” The event will take place from 9 a.m. to approximately 10 p.m. April 5 and 6 in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center inside the Dugan Library and Campus Center on the Newman campus.
The festival will focus on literature that addresses the results of violent upheaval such as war, family trauma, civil unrest or personal tragedy, and how people put their lives back together following such events. The festival includes the presentation of papers by middle- and high-school students, college undergraduate and graduate students, and professionals from a variety of fields. Panel discussions following the presentations will review some of the topics featured in the papers.
At 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, author Jay Snodgrass will read from Monster Zero, his award-winning book of Godzilla poems. The reading will be followed by a screening of Gojira (Godzilla) beginning at 8:30 p.m.
At 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, Newman Assistant Professor of Philosophy Christopher Fox, Ph.D. will present “Testing the Waters: The States of Forgiveness on the Islands of Japan,” followed by a Godzilla Panel Discussion at 8:30 p.m.
The festival is open to the public for a fee of $5, which includes entry to all events and a box lunch on both days. Newman students will be admitted free with a student ID.
The Literary Festival is sponsored by Newman University in association with Wichita State University, Wichita Southeast High School, and the Sedgwick County Zoo.
