Newman University Offers Free Math and Science Program for Female High School Students
Wichita, Kan. – In keeping with its mission of educating the mind and inspiring the spirit, the Math and Science Departments at Newman University will again host the Women Exploring Math and Science (WXMS) Summer Institute. The program, which is designed for females who will be high school sophomores, juniors or seniors in the 2008-09 school year, will be offered June 10-12. Tuition will be waived, and participants will receive one hour of college credit upon completion of the institute.
The WXMS Summer Institute began in 2005. It is offered in response to a growing demand for female professionals in mathematics- and science-related fields, said WXMS Summer Institute Director and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Lori Steiner, Ph.D. Women are currently underrepresented in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering, she said. A primary goal of the WXMS program is to motivate and encourage young women to pursue an active interest in mathematics and science.
The program will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 10-12. Free meals will be served each day. Participating students will also stay overnight on June 10 and 11 for free in student residences on the Newman campus.
The program will include guest speakers from Newman and the Wichita community, who will share their experiences within their professional lives, including the personal, economic and intellectual demands and rewards of their professions. The institute will also offer hands-on inquiry and discovery problem-solving activities through individual and group exercises.
Guest speakers include Shelly Steadman, Ph.D, forensic biology/DNA laboratory manager with the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center, Kim Patterson, industrial engineer at Cessna Aircraft Company, and Judy Gallman, associate technical fellow at Propulsion Analysis, Spirit AeroSystems. Gallman will also lead a field trip to the Spirit AeroSystems Acoustics Lab.
Other speakers will be Newman University’s Stacy Jones, Ph.D, assistant professor of biology, Susan Orsbon, M.A., assistant professor of biology, and Steiner.
“We are very excited to be able to offer this program again to high school students,” Steiner said. “The institute is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet with professional women who use mathematics and science every day. We’ll also have many activities designed to show students the relevance of mathematics and science to their lives and their own future careers. I believe they’ll find the program very engaging and inspiring.”
Registration is now open. Preference will be given to students who register by May 12. All applications must be postmarked by May 26 for guaranteed consideration. Applicants selected to attend the program will be notified by June 3.
