Newman University Women’s Basketball Signs Point Guard Alexis Wright for 2008-09 Season

Wichita, Kan. – Newman Women’s Basketball Head Coach Tracy Anderson has announced her first signee for the spring signing period. Cowley County Community College sophomore point guard Alexis Wright has signed with the Jets and will join the team for the 2008-2009 season.

Wright joins the Jets after a solid campaign in arguably the toughest junior college conference in the country. The Tigers went a combined 41-24 and made it all the way to the conference tournament championship game before losing to Cloud County.

“There is no doubt that Alexis brings an enthusiasm and total team mentality with her,” Anderson said. “She comes from a great teacher in Coach Todd Clark and she knows how to win. I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach her for her final two years of competition.”

While at Cowley, Wright helped lead the Tigers to back-to-back 20-win seasons while starting all 32 games as a freshman. She was also a team captain this past season. To view her stats, click here.

“Alexis will bring two very important qualities to our program which we identified as a must for this recruiting class,” Anderson said. “She is athletic so she can really ‘D’ up on the perimeter, and most importantly she is a tremendous passer.”

According to Anderson, the Jets needed an up-tempo guard with the ability to push the ball quickly while being able to make good decisions in half court situations. “The one stat that is so impressive with Alexis is her assist-to-turnover ratio, which is .9,” Anderson said. “As a young guard competing in that league (the Jayhawk Conference), she obviously valued possessions, and my team needs to learn that.”

The 5’6” Wright is the daughter of Elex and Dehavlinn Wright, and a Derby High School graduate. While at Cowley she won the Paul Newman and Miss Biddy awards and plans to major in business at Newman.

The young Jets return four starters and 11 of their top 12 players, including their leading scorer sophomore Gretchen Berns, who was a 2nd Team All-Heartland Conference pick this past season.
