Newman University Celebrates Class of 2008

Wichita, Kan. - Newman University celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2008 with the Spring 2008 Commencement exercises, Saturday, May 10 at Central Community Church in Wichita. This year, 349 candidates for graduation participated in the Commencement ceremony, including some students scheduled to complete their degree requirements in the summer 2008 semester.

Wichita, Kan. – The Newman University Athletics Department honored graduating senior student-athletes in a special banquet in May at the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center on the Newman campus. Awards were given for both athletic and academic performance in several categories.

Wichita, Kan. – Newman University Professor of English Bryan Dietrich, Ph.D. will hold a public reading from his new book of poetry, Universal Monsters, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30 at Eighth Day Books, 2838 E. Douglas in Wichita. Dietrich will sign books following the reading. The reading is free and open to the public.

Oakley High School Standout Signs with Newman University Women’s Basketball

Wichita, Kan. - Newman University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tracy Anderson announced that her third player of the spring signing period is Oakley, Kan., high school standout Brea Teeter. Teeter was part of the Plainsmen team that won the Class 2A State Basketball Championship in 2007 and placed 3rd at the 2A State Volleyball Tournament.

Jet Open Golf Tournament Raises $43,000 to Benefit Newman University Athletes

Wichita, Kan. - The Newman University 24th Annual Jet Open Charity Golf Tournament raised $43,840 to help support Newman athletic scholarships, programs and facilities. The event held April 28 at Rolling Hills Country Club, hosted 136 players and featured prizes for top teams and individuals, and a silent and a live auction.

Newman University Students to Hand Deliver 22,000 Toothbrushes to Guatemalan Children

Wichita, Kan. – This past March, students in the Newman University “Study and Serve in Guatemala 2008” program launched a campaign to collect 11,000 new toothbrushes by May 1 for Guatemalan children. The campaign, called Project SONRISA, caught the attention of the Wichita/metro community and beyond. Area dentists, schools, churches, media outlets and individuals from across the state and overseas participated in the toothbrush collection.
