Wichita, Kan. – Newman University officials announced today that Head Wrestling Coach Mark Stovall has resigned to take a position with the Heartspring School in Wichita for special needs children. Newman Assistant Wrestling Coach Ryan Smith has been promoted to the head coaching position on a one-year interim basis. The change in coaching leadership is effective immediately.

The Newman University Wrestling Team finished its season March 15 with a runner-up finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships in Lakeland, Fla. The Jets missed the No. 1 spot by only 10 points to returning national champion Grand Valley State University. Nine Newman Jets earned All-American status at the championship tournament.

The Newman University Wrestling Team will compete in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships March 14, 15, and 16. The host of the Championships is the University of Central Florida in Lakeland, Florida. The Jets go into the Championships ranked 4th in the NCWA Coaches Poll.

Jets Dominate Conference Championships

The Newman University Wrestling Team dominated the NCWA Southwest Conference Championships in Manhattan, Kan. this past weekend. The Jets won the tournament with a total of twelve top 4 placers. All placers will advance to the NCWA National Championships at the University of Central Florida in Lakeland, Fla. The Championships will take place on March 13, 14, and 15.

Isaac Wall and Curtis Chenoweth eached picked up pins for the squad, but it wasn't enough for the Jets to get past the Tigers from Fort Hays State University (FHSU). The Jets fell 24-12 in the cross state showdown. The Tigers won 8 of the 10 matches.

The Newman University Wrestling Team will take on cross-state rival Fort Hays State University at home on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. The Jets, coming off a strong finish at the NCWA National Duals, boast a dual record of 7-6. The Tigers, ranked #20 in NCAA II, come to the match-up with a 3-4 dual record.

The Newman University Wrestling Team finished in second place in Cedar Falls, Iowa this past weekend at the NCWA Cliff Keen National Duals. At the prestigious event, the top teams in each division are pitted against each other in head to head competition.

The Newman Jets Wrestling team shined last night against the Colorado School of Mines. The Jets won the dual by taking 7 of the 10 matches and amassing a score of 34-15.

Aeron Hill shined at this past weekend's Newman Open. Hill won the 141 lb. weight class by defeating returning NJCAA National Champion, Tim Elliot, by way of fall. Josh Fansler won the 197 lb. weight class by defeating York's Brian Irsik in the final match.<

Varsity Wrestle-Offs This Friday

The Newman University Wrestling Team will debut this Friday with intersquad wrestle-offs at 7 p.m. in the Fugate Gymnasium. Come out and support the Jets. Admission is free! A clinic will be offered to all wrestlers ages 5-12 for $5. The clinic will begin 45 minutes prior to the wrestle-offs.
