Sacred Heart Academy (1945-1967)
Catherine E. Halda of Virginia Beach, VA  passed away peacefully August 1, 2010.  She was a resident of Marian Manor in Virginia Beach.  Sending our sympathy to the Halda family.

Carol (Wirths) O'Connor SHA '66

Raymond W. Wirths, 95, retired contractor, farmer and businessman passed away on April 21, 2011.  He is survived by children: Keith (Susie), Kenneth, Ronald (Carol), Gary, (Janet), Carol (Gerald) O'Connor, Wayne (Patricia), Gerald (Michelle), James, (Dianna), Raymond (Mary), Jr., Joanne (Michael) Knight, and Randall (Natalie).  There are 33 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and ten great-great grandchildren.  Sending our sympathy from the Newman University community.

Michelle (Ruge) Garrett '85

Joyce M. Ruge, 73, lost her battle with cancer on April 16, 2011.  She is a retired Boeing Company employee and beloved Wife,  Mother and Grandmother.  She is survived by husband, Thomas: sons Thomas (Judy), Todd (Elizabeth), daughters Natalie (Brad) Johnson, Michelle (Andy) Garrett, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  Sending our prayers to the Ruge family.

Jerry Menges, 81, died April 15, 2011.  He was the owner of Menges Rental, and brother of Newman alum, Carol Menges Henderson A '58.  Jerry and family was a longtime donor of tents for NU Alumni fund raising events in support of his sister.  Jerry and sons created the fireworks displays used at the 75th Anniversary Party on the Ponderosa and the 2010 Party on the Plaza.  He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; sons Mike, Mark, Matt and Mitch; daughters, Mary Tudor, Margaret...

Joan (Soukup) Stadler '76

Joan (Soukup) Stadler M.Ed, RD was elected as Kansas Dietetic Association President 2010-2011.  Joan is the Clinical Nutrition Management Supervisory Dietitian at the Robert J. Dole VAMC in Wichita, KS.  She was recently selected as the Distinguished Dietitian of the Year for Kansas by the KS Dietetic Association.  Her photo appeared in the Wichita Eagle Business section on March 24, 2011.  Congratulations Joan!

Raymond Carl Hemken

Raymond Carl Hemken, 87, retired farmer and Boeing flight line mechanic, died March 21, 2011.  He is the father of five Newman graduates.  He is survived by wife: Venda; children: Dennis '73 (Linda), Doris '72(Michael) Gerik, Dolores '71 (Jerry) Ewald, David '74, Diane '77 (Fred) Stump, Debra (Paul) Sontheimer.  There are 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  Our sympathy and prayers are extended to the Hemken family.

Loretta Thome, ASC SJA '42

Sister Loretta Thome died March 25, 2011.  She was 91; 70 of her years were lived as a professed Adorer of the Blood of Christ.  Loretta spent most of her career as a nurse and listening to her experiences puts real details on how much changed from the World War II nurse shortages, 14 to 16 hour shifts, and  treating polio patients.  Working in obstetrics and the newborn nursery was a joy for her.  Leaving active nursing, necessitated by her increasing loss of hearing,...

Rita (Brown) Schoeppel SHJC '41

Rita Louise (Brown) Schoeppel, 88, homemaker, passed away August 6, 2010.  She is survived by her son, Fred; daughters Cynthia, Mary M., and Josephine.  There is one grandson and two great-grandsons.  Sending our sympathy to the Schoeppel family.

Sending our sympathy to Leah (Booth) and Robin Parker on the death of their Father, Charles Booth.  Charles, 57, of Las Cruces, NM died March 14, 2011.  He was a veteran of the US Army where he served our country honorably.  While in the service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the H16 Expert Qualifying Ribbon.  Charles had a great love for his country.  He is survived by his son, Taylor, and daughter Leah (Robin)...
