The Jets didn't allow a goal until the 34th minute and trailed just 1-0 at the intermission. But Oklahoma City scored five goals in the second period, including two by senior Dusty Cagle in a 10-second span.
Newman finishes its season 5-11-2.

The Jets fell behind 3-0 as Drury got two goals in the first half and another in the second half. Newman's only goal was scored by freshman Lance Putnam. Newman men get first home win of the season
Wednesday, Oct. 18 - The Newman men almost had a shutout of Central Christian, but settled for a 2-1 win Wednesday night at Wilkins Field.
The Jets worked their way to a 2-0 lead over the Tigers before Central Christian was awarded a penalty kick with two minutes to play. Casey Sowells converted the kick to make the score 2-1.
Still, Newman got the win – a game that might have been a bit more lopsided had not two other shots just miss. One went off the crossbar and another clanked off the right post in the first half.
The first goal came on a header by senior Randolph Jardine on an assist be fellow senior Tom Newby.
The second goal came when William Peppard tried to cross the ball to a teammate. The ball, however, snuck past the surprised goalkeeper and settled into the net.
“When you are doing good things, you create a little luck,” Coach Cliff Brown said. “It was a dangerous ball that their defense couldn’t handle”
Newby also had the assist on that goal. “Tom played his best game of the year,” Brown said.
Brown was disappointed that Central Christian was awarded the late penalty kick on what the coach thought was a clean tackle. But overall, he was pleased to see his Jets earn a home victory. It’s the first home win of the season for Newman after coming so close so many times this year.
“It’s nice to get a win at home,” Brown said. “It’s cold out here, but there were people here to support us who stayed to the end. We appreciate the support and it’s nice to reward them with a win.”
Newman is now 5-9-2 on the season and will play its final home game of the season on Friday against Drury. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Newman plays well in second half of loss to Park
Saturday, Oct. 14 - The Newman men dominated the second half of a match against Park University on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a halftime deficit, as the Jets fell 2-1 at Wilkins Field.
Park jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, and Newman Coach Cliff Brown had a stern talk with his team at the intermission.
“We started slow,” Brown said. “In the second half, they took the things we talked about at half and basically, we were the better team. We played real well in the second half.
The Jets got their only goal on a diving header by Tico Rodriguez with the assist by Pablo Molina. But it wasn’t Newman’s only scoring opportunity. Molina had a shot of his own that bounced off the crossbar and with 20 seconds left, Jason Streit had a header that got past the goalkeeper. But the ball was cleared away by a Park defender before it could cross the goal line, preserving the victory for the Pirates.
The 2-1 loss was the second in two days by the same score, as the Jets fell to Texas A&M International on Friday. The two defeats put Newman at 4-9-2 on the season. Park is now 8-6 on the season. Newman’s next action will be Wednesday at home against Central Christian College. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Late goals lifts Texas A&M International over Newman
Friday, Oct. 13 - Texas A&M International scored two late goals - both on corner kicks - to defeat Newman 2-1 Friday night at Wilkins Field in Wichita.
Newman, which scored midway through the first half on a goal from freshman William Peppard, led most of the game. But with six minutes left in the contest, TAMIU tied the score on a corner kick. Kark McGettrick served up the ball from the left side of the keeper and Gabriel Arias kicked it in.
With just over a minute left in the contest, a Newman defender tried to play the ball back to keeper Emmanuel Gutierrez. But the ball went wide of goal, setting up another TAMIU corner. Again McGettrick served up the ball, and this time Raul Quiñones headed the ball into the upper-left corner of the goal, getting the the game-winning score.
It is the third game this season Newman has lost in the final minutes, the second time it has lost by misplaying a ball back to its own goal.
"It's just disappointing to lose at the end on two dead balls," Coach Cliff Brown said. "We've got to have commitment all the way to the end."
Texas A&M International is now 4-6 on the season. Newman falls to 4-8-2 and will play Saturday against NAIA national power Park University.

Jets earn shutout win in Texas
Saturday, Oct. 7 - The Newman men's soccer team finished up its seven-game road trip with a 2-0 victory at Northwood University in suburban Dallas.
Coach Cliff Brown kept the same starting lineup that played so well the weekend before at York, and the move continued to pay off. The Jets scored both goals in the first half, the first by Mario Vasquez and the second by Mohamed Harting, with an assist by Pablo Molina.
"We played very, very well in the first and were ok in the second half," Brown said. "Overall, we played really well."

Lineup changes spark Newman to 3-1 win over York
Sunday, Oct. 1 - Frustrated by his team’s sluggish play in a 3-0 loss at Bellevue on Saturday afternoon, Newman coach Cliff Brown shook up his lineup Sunday at York.
The move paid immediate dividends as Newman’s Randolph Jardine assisted Emmanuel Gutierrez for a goal in the third minute of the game, paving the way for a 3-1 win for the Jets.
Gutierrez, who is normally the team’s goalkeeper, started at forward for the Jets at York. Marcelo Mayagoitia, another keeper, also started in the field for Newman while freshman Daniel Gossein started as keeper. Newman played a crisper style of soccer at York, moving the ball and finding teammates much better than it had in the lackluster loss at Bellevue the day before. The Jets also got goals from Silas Trujillo and Mario Vasquez.
With the win, Newman is now 3-7-2 on the season, having won three of its past five games. The Jets are still in the midst of a seven-game road streak, which they will continue when they travel to Cedar Hill, Texas next Saturday for a game against Northwood.

Jets defeat Tabor to earn first victory
Tuesday, Sept. 19 - The Newman men’s soccer team recorded its first victory of the season Tuesday afternoon, defeating Tabor College 4-2 in Hillsboro.
The win snaps a seven-game winless streak to start the season – a streak in which Newman had played well in many games only to see them end in a tie or a defeat.
“It is nice to get the first win,” head coach Cliff Brown said. “Hopefully, we can take what we did well in this game and start to build on that.”
Newman got two goals in the first half, one each from Pablo Molina and Tico Rodriguez. Molina scored his second goal just three minutes into the second half, and Newman led 3-0. Tabor, however, scored two goals in a three-minute span to cut Newman’s lead to just one before William Peppard scored for the final margin.
“I think our guys took a breath and relaxed,” Brown said after his team went ahead by three goals. “Tabor came back quickly before we were able to regain our composure and score another goal.”
Brown and his coaching staff found success with moving some players to different positions. Molina, who was shifted from the midfield to forward, was one of those players. He took advantage, scoring two goals. William Peppard, who moved from defense to midfield, also contributed a lot to the win, including a goal. Brown also noted the play of forward Tom Newby, who had two assists and created other scoring opportunities for the Jets.
Newman, now 1-5-2 on the season, travels to Bartlesville on Saturday to face Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Late mistake costly in 2-1 loss to McPherson
Friday, Sept. 15 - An errant kick with 36 seconds left lifted the McPherson Bulldogs to a 2-1 win over Newman University on Friday night at Wilkins Field.
McPherson scored first, with Eduardo Rodriguez netting an unassisted goal in the 30th minute. Newman answered in the second half, when Tom Newby converted a penalty kick to tie the game 1-1.
“We couldn’t maintain the momentum,” coach Cliff Brown said of his team after the tying goal. “We needed to be able to keep pressure on them.”
The game appeared headed for overtime, but with under a minute to play, McPherson pushed a ball deep into Newman territory. A Jets defender tried to clear the ball, but it instead passed over the outstretched arms of keeper Emmanuel Gutierrez, giving the Bulldogs a dramatic win.
The play was like many in the second half when McPherson would serve up long balls that its speedy forwards would try to convert into goals. Newman was able to turn away those attempts until the late miscue.
“They were effective at what they were doing,” Brown said. “Their pressure forced us into a mistake.”
With the loss, Newman falls to 0-3-2 on the season. McPherson evens its record at 2-2-1. The Jets will next play on Sunday at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. It is the first of a seven-game road trip for Newman.

Newman plays to scoreless tie with Northeastern Oklahoma State
Wednesday, Sept 6 - The Newman men’s soccer team played to a scoreless tie with Northeastern Oklahoma State Wednesday evening in Tahlequah, Okla.
The game was Newman’s third in the past five days, and coach Cliff Brown thinks his players may have still been a bit tired from two games played on wet, soggy fields in South Dakota over the weekend. In addition, injuries and red card suspensions limited Newman to 13 players in the contest.
“It was a battle for 120 minutes,” Brown said. “We played with a lot of heart; a lot of courage.”
Northeastern outshot Newman 31-4 in the contest, but Jets goalkeeper Emmanuel Gutierrez stopped everything that came his way.
“Emmanuel was absolutely unbelievable,” Brown said. “He had 11 saves and many of them were spectacular. It was an outstanding performance by our goalkeeper.”
Even with the fatigue brought on by a second double-overtime contest in the past three games, Brown said the Jets nearly scored to win the game with several shots in the second overtime period, but Northeastern keeper Devon Murray was able to preserve the tie.
With the tie, Newman is now 0-2-2 on the season. Northeastern State, which had beaten 12th-ranked Colorado School of Mines in its season opener, is now 2-1-1.
