Rain douses home matches against Hutchinson
Tuesday, April 17 - The Newman tennis teams lost their matches Tuesday evening - not to the competition, but to the weather. A steady rain forced the cancellation of both the men's and women's matches against Hutchinson. The matches will not be made up.
Newman will play two matches this weekend, traveling to Great Bend for a Friday match at Barton County and to Lindsborg on Saturday to face Bethany.

Jets fall twice in Oklahoma
Monday, April 16 - Newman's women went 0-2 this weekend with an 8-0 loss to Central Oklahoma and an 8-1 loss at Oklahoma Wesleyan.
Against UCO, Matzen and Erica Lopez played in a tight #1 doubles match but lost to Julie Vo and Dario Titkina UCOK 8-5.
When the match was over the Jets quickly drove through pouring rain to Bartlesville to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan. Dixie Matzen was again the lone winner as she put a stomping on #1 Aida Hernandez 6-0, 6-0. Sara Allen came close at #5 singles losing to Brenda Gunter of OWU 7-6, 2-6, 5-10. The #1doubles team of Matzen/Lopez NU almost squeezed out the win but came up short to Amanda Beagle/Amy Dozier OWU 7-9. #2 doubles team of Kacie Brown and Kelly Rutherford NU also fought hard as they came down to the wire against Kacie Potts/Sarah Coggins but lost 6-8 also.
Jets are in action again next week as they play Tabor Monday April 16 3:30 in Hillsboro and then against Hutchinson C.C. home here in Wichita.

Jets fall to Fort Hays State, 8-1
Wednesday, April 11 - Dodging rain and sleet didn’t help the Lady Jets as they went down to Fort Hays State 8-1.
Junior Dixie Matzen was the lone Newman winner, defeating FHSU senior MaryAnne Tablot 4-6, 6-0, 10-8. Sr. Erica Lopez NU came close at the #2 spot but lost to Helen Harris FHS 6-1, 7-5.
The Jets are on the road Friday with two matches down in Oklahoma against University of Central Oklahoma at 11:30 and then in Bartlesville at 4:00 against Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Lady Jets drop close match to Bethel
Wednesday, March 28 - Newman's women started strong but in the end lost a close match to Bethel College by a 5-4 score.
Dixie Matzen and Erica Lopez got Newman off to a good start as they won #1 doubles 8-2. Then Liz Seiler and Kacie Brown won # 2 doubles 9-7. The lady jets began the singles up 2-1 and picked up the early lead when Matzen won #1 singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. This put Newman up 3-1 until #6 singles and #5 singles wins went in Bethel's favor, that tied the score 3-3.
#3 singles Kacie Brown brought in a hard-fought comeback winat 6-2, 7-5. Bethel again tied the score at 4-4, making the #4 singles the deciding matchup. Newman's Liz Seiler kept it close but ended up on the short end 6-3, 6-4.
Newman’s next match is Thursday March 29 at Cowley County at 2 p.m.

Jets Get Defeated in TexasSaturday, March 3 - The Newman women's tennis team went 0-3 this weekend on a road trip to Texas. The Jets fell 8-1 against Southern Arkansas (D2( on Friday. Then on Saturday, Newman lost 6-2 to Le Tourneau University(D3) and dropped a 5-1 decision to Heartland Conference foe Dallas Baptist(D2).
The highlight of the weekend was the No. 1 doubles team of Dixie Matzen and Erica Lopez, which won all three of their doubles matches. Matzen won one singles match too against Sarah Carroll LTU 6-1, 6-0. Erica Lopez had three close matches at #2 singles. Against Southern Arkansas's Nelly Tualla the match scores were 6-4, 6-4. Against Le Tourneau's Briana Olivo, match scores were 6-4, 6-4. Then in the match against Dallas Baptist's Lacy Eggleston the score was 4-4 when play was stopped. As a whole the weekend was very challenging with some outstanding performances and some very close losses. This week the Jets play Bethany College Tues.March 6 1:00, Emporia State Friday March 9 at ESU 5:30 and then the Men play Winona State Sat. March 10 at ESU.

Lady Jets win; men fall to No. 6-ranked Seward C.C.
Thursday, March 1 - Lady Jets as a team today beat 13th ITA/NJCAA ranked Seward County in a close match 5-4.
Newman's Kacie Brown and Kelly Rutherford at #2 doubles won 8-5 and then Kacie won the deciding #4 singles matchagainst Seward's Sanela Dejanovic, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. Newman's Dixie Matzen and Erica Lopez came close to knocking off #23 ranked doubles team of Abdullah, Abdullah, but lost 8-5. Matzen fought hard in a three-set match with#26 ranked Amina Abdullah of Seward before losing 6-3, 2-6, 1-6. Lopez came close against #32 ranked Uthala Abdullah losing 4-6, 5-7.
The Newman Men's team lost to # 6 ITA/NJCAA ranked Seward County 9-0. Seven Seward singles and doubles teams are ranked in the top 30 nationally. Newman's Joe Oakes and Drew Spencer had a good doubles match but lost 8-2. Newman players Rob Hadlow and Suraj Lohoni made their collegiate debuts in the match.
Both the Men and Women will be in action this weekend in Texas against Southern Arkansas, Le Tourneau University, and Dallas Baptist.

Jets face first NCAA DII competition
Saturday, Feb. 17 - Despite the extreme cold weather and high wind gusts, the Lady Jets competed tough against both a pair of NCAA Division II opponents over the weekend in Oklahoma.
On Friday, Newman' faced East Central University, falling 9-0. Newman'sDixie Matzen played East Central's Dashka Segenchuk who placed fifth in this years NCAA DII Individual Championships. Although Matzen lost 6-1, 6-4, Coach Shella Augsperger said she played well and the experience will help her the rest of the season. At No. 5 singles, Newman's Mallory Huntoon came back tough against Erin Miller but lost 6-1, 7-5.
On Saturday, Newman faced Southeastern Oklahoma State, again falling 9-0. Matzen again played No. 1 singles, falling 6-3-, 6-3 to Cindy Thomas in a wind battle. At No. 2 singles, Erica Lopez had a closer match than the score indicated, flosing 6-2, 6-2.
The Newman Tennis team will be in action next March 1 where they will play Seward County Community College at home at Riverside Tennis Center.

Barton Community College Tennis Invitational, Oct. 6-7
Both the Women and Men tennis teams traveled to the Barton County Community College Invitational this past weekend. The Women had their best showing of the Fall season. Dixie Matzen and Kacie Brown finished strong in the semi-finals of the top doubles Flight but lost to Barton C.C. #1 team 8-2. The doubles team of Mallory Alexander and Kelly Rutherford captured the Fight 2 Consolation Championship with an 8-4 victory over Barton C.C. In singles Matzen lost in the semi-finals of the #1 Flight to Seward C.C. #1 player Abdullah 7-5,6-1. Brown also made it to the semi-finals of the #3 Flight but lost to Davis from Seward C.C. 6-3,6-4. Mallory Alexander played Prier from Bethany in the Flight#2 Consolation Finals but lost in a close one 8-5.
On the Men’s side Drew Spencer and Joe Oakes played in the semi-finals of the 2nd Flight Doubles but came up short to Seward’s #3 team and lost 8-5. Individually, Oakes won the 2nd Flight consolation singles and Spencer lost in the semi-finals of the 3rd Flight to Seward’s Yamamota.
Both the Men and Women are finished with their tough Fall Individual season and will enjoy their few weeks off before starting their off season weight and conditioning programs. First match of the Spring Season 2007 will be a Quad Match Feb 16th and 17th held at East Central Oklahoma University where both teams will have 3 matches against (D2) East Central Oklahoma, (D2) Southeastern Oklahoma University and (NAIA) Oklahoma Christian University.

Wichita Intercollegiate Tournament, Sept. 8-9
Newman's tennis individuals competed well at the Wichita Intercollegiate Tournament on Sept. 8-9.
On the women's side, five of seven players made it to the semis and finals of their respective flights.Newcomer freshman Kacie Brown won three of four matches to win the F flight. Sr. Erica Lopez also won three of four matches to place second in the E flight. Jr. Dixie Matzen won two of four matches, falling in the semifinal round of the D flight.
Senior Liz Seiler and freshman Kelly Rutherford went head-to-head in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, with Rutherford came out on top and then went on to win in the finals against a player from Oklahoma Baptist University.
For the men, sophomore Joe Oakes went 2-2 andsophomore Drew Spencer went 2-1 to reach the semifinals in the F flight. Oakes and Spencer then teamed up and won the Doubles in Flight F with a 2-0 record.
Both Newman teams will be in action Sept. 15-16 at the Bethany Invitational Tournament.
