The Newman wrestling team closed out the home portion of its dual season in style, picking up a 24-21 in over Central Missouri Wednesday night inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Mules have been ranked all season, but are receiving votes in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

The Newman wrestling team picked up its first dual wins of the season last weekend at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas. After falling to two teams tied for third in the national polls (Nebraska-Kearney and Central Oklahoma), the Jets picked up wins over NCAA Div. II foe New Mexico Highlands, and NCWA foes Texas-Arlington and Texas-A&M.

Tyler Hasenbank's third-place finish in the 184 lb. bracket highlighted Newman's appearance at the Quality Hotels Invitational on Jan. 10 in Hastings, Neb. Hasenbank posted a 4-1 record in his bracket, falling only to the eventual champion in the semifinals.

The Newman wrestling team once again found itself among elite competition at the Bob Smith Open, which was held Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kan. Trae Treleaven and brothers Blake and Brent Fisher were the only Newman wrestlers to finish with winning records at the event.

Austin Workman defeated the third-ranked junior college wrestler in the nation, but it wasn't enough to lift Newman past No. 11 Pratt Community College, falling 31-9 to the Beavers Wednesday night inside Fugate Gymnasium.

Newman University will hold its first wrestling dual of the 2009-10 season Wednesday evening when Pratt Community College pays a visit to Fugate Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. dual match. The event will be Newman's first dual competition of the season, and they will be put to the test early against the Beavers, who are ranked No. 11 in the latest NJCAA National Poll.

Missouri – The Newman University wrestling team continued to battle injuries and wrestle short-handed in matches at Central Missouri State and at the Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Mo. Mitch Arnold and Isaac Wall both put in strong weekends before each succumbed to the injury bug.

Isaac Wall (125 lbs.) and Josh Fansler (197 lbs.) were both recognized this week by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.

Wichita, Kan. – Newman University officials announced today that Head Wrestling Coach Mark Stovall has resigned to take a position with the Heartspring School in Wichita for special needs children. Newman Assistant Wrestling Coach Ryan Smith has been promoted to the head coaching position on a one-year interim basis. The change in coaching leadership is effective immediately.
