At Newman University, we offer students the opportunity to participate in a variety of performing ensembles, music courses, music lessons, and a music minor that allow our students to remain active and excel in music at the collegiate level.
The Newman University Concert Band focuses on performing traditional band and wind ensemble literature as well as symphonic arrangements, concert marches, show tune and movie arrangements, and new compositions. The Concert Band performs a minimum of two concerts annually. On the spring concert we feature graduating band members as soloists.
Consistent with the mission of service so vital to the Newman experience, we look forward to visiting secondary schools, sharing our gifts with young musicians. In the future we also hope to sponsor an instrument drive to further aid developing programs at schools in need.
Strings have an important place in the Music Department at Newman. The String Ensemble tackles music of many centuries and in every style imaginable, and amplified violins have added an exciting edge to the Jets Band. The String Ensemble also combines forces with the Concert Band for a symphonic experience.
Newman musicians have the opportunity to be a part of the sports tradition at the University. During the basketball season, the Jets Band performs at Mens' and Womens' games, helping to give our teams a real home court advantage!
The opportunities for performing are endless at Newman. We have the option for students to create small ensembles such as jazz combos, woodwind or brass ensembles, like-instrument choirs, and many more. Students are also able to take private lessons and give a recital on any instrument with instructor consent.
