Theatre

Newman University currently offers a minor in theatre, but the rapidly growing Theatre Department is building toward a major in theatre for the spring of 2013. Consequently, any students enrolling for the fall of 2012 will be admitted with the intent to major or minor in theatre. The program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the discipline, and includes many opportunities for students to learn through performance.

Prominent Careers

The program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the discipline, and includes many opportunities for students to learn through performance. The university produces and stages an annual musical and an annual dramatic performance and will increase production output once the major is established. The Department holds students to professional standards and strives to present a quality product. A student participating in theatre at Newman can expect to work on a variety of plays that include comedy, drama, contemporary, classical, musicals and other great works of dramatic literature. Theatre scholarships are available by filling out a scholarship application and scheduling an audition/interview.

More Information

A minor in theatre can be enhanced by another minor or in a variety of subject choices. These include journalism, communication, music, marketing, education, speech, and others. A minor in theatre also prepares you to pursue bachelors and advanced degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts in Theatre, Master of Fine Arts, and others.

Curriculum

All students seeking a minor in theatre are required to take a core set of theatre classes along with classes covering an area of emphasis or interest. Students will be guided through the journey by professional, practicing artists. The program of study includes introductory courses as well as courses in acting, stagecraft, voice and diction, directing and others.

Graduation requirements

Students must earn a minimum of 124 credit hours for graduation. Upon completion of the general education requirements, the minor in theatre includes a total of 18 hours. Please consult the Newman University Catalog for specific class selections and further details.

Facilities

De Mattias Fine Arts Center

This facility, opened in 2000, includes Performance Hall, the Jabara Flexible Theatre, dressing rooms and a scene shop. The center also houses music rehearsal space with studio and practice rooms, an art gallery, and studios for sculpture, ceramics, painting and drawing, and computer graphics.

Performance Hall

Performance Hall has fixed seating for 392 with a 50-foot wide stage providing multiple lighting and sound capabilities.

Jabara Flexible Theatre

This black box theatre holds a maximum of 190 people depending on setup and provides multiple lighting and sound capabilities.
